About the hamsa (Arabic: خمسة khamsah, Hebrew: חַמְסָה hamesh, Berber: ⵜⴰⴼⵓⵙⵜ tafust), is a palm-shaped amulet popular throughout the Middle East and North Africa and commonly used in jewelry and wall hangings. Khamsah in Arabic means "five", in Hebrew hamesh. The open hand has been a sign of protection throughout history, and among Jews and Muslims it is believed to provide defense against evil.
